Winter Wonderland

Winter cupcakes...I love the snowman! White buttercream with tip 12 on the bottom, a marshmallow in the center, and buttercream eyes/nose/mouth/hat. Pretzel sticks for the arms. Super cute! Santa hats are just buttercream swirls.

Snowman cake...I made this very spur of the moment because I really wanted to make the icicle border on the side, LOL. All buttercream. I only wish I had taken the time to make the snowman's nose orange instead of black.

Mermaid Cake

I made this mermaid cake for a second birthday. I think the "doll cakes" using the Wilton Wonder Mold pan turn out so great - I remember having one for a birthday when I was a child. I just love the look of the waves on the doll cake, the seashells, the mermaid's tail...it all came together so perfectly! The cupcakes were made to match the cake. I made chocolate for the tops of the cupcakes in the shape of seashells to go with the theme. Aside from the chocolate on the cupcakes and the doll body - the cake and cupcakes are all decorated with buttercream.

Free Cakes for Kids

A local mommy/cake decorator friend, Emily, and I chatted about starting a program to provide free cakes for kids in the area who would not otherwise have a birthday cake for themselves. Once a month we decorate cakes and take them to a group of kids who meet at a local church - it is called the F.R.O.G. program.

Here are some of the cakes I've made for these kids!

Fall and Halloween Fun

Pumpkin patch cake for a fall birthday. I molded the pumpkins out of chocolate, and the haystacks are butterscotch covered with frosting. I used the grass tip for the top of the cake and the bottom border, and pretzels to form a fence around the sides.

Mummy-riffic cupcakes! Spooky! Chocolate cupcakes with white buttercream icing and orange eyes. Boo!

Spooktastic cupcakes for Halloween....Monsters, Mummies, Spiderwebs and Pumpkins (oh my!) All buttercream icing.

Poker and Bowling go hand in hand

My boyfriend is an aspiring pro-bowler and pro-poker player. What better to celebrate his birthday last year than two cakes featuring his favorite hobbies?

The bowling pins and bowling ball were free-handed using a toothpick so I could get them *just right* before using the icing.

His favorite poker hand...eight-ten of hearts. He won a big tournament with this hand!

A poker cake for one of his friends...featuring his favorite hand ("The Hammer")....seven-deuce off suit. LOL. My first attempt at a FBCT (frozen buttercream transfer) for the cards.

Detroit Redwings Cake

I don't know much about hockey, but I do know that this cake was crazy fun to make! I carved it out of a sheet cake and printed the logo (mirror image) and cut it out. To get the image on the cake, I took a sheet of wax paper and punched holes in it all the way around the lines of the logo. The holes left enough of a pattern on the wax paper to impress it on the top of the cake. All I needed to do was fill it in with red icing. A little tricky, but it worked! Now if only I could get my red icing to look truly red...

Whipped Cream frosting

My first foray into using whipped cream frosting. I can't remember which recipe I used, I just know I found it on Cake Central. It's not very easy to decorate with, but it sure does taste yummy! A Welcome Home cake and a Birthday cake.

Spring and Summer cakes

An assortment of cakes I made during the spring and summer months of 2008.

Flip Flop cake...all buttercream with twizzlers for the top part of the sandals.

Sunglasses cake...super fun and super easy! A round cake cut with a wavy line down the center (think yin-yang), and then a little notch cut out and placed in the center for the bridge of the glasses.

My first doll cake! I made this for a TriadMommies event. First time using the Wilton Wonder Mold too!

Fishbowl...I never finished this one b/c the event I made it for was canceled due to weather. I was going to add rainbow goldfish crackers! I used jellybeans and candy straws to make the "stones" and "grass".

Swimming pool cake...I love this one! I used Starburst for the "tiles" around the pool, Teddy Graham crackers, gum balls, fruit strips, and gummy lifesavers. I even used frosting to put little bathing suits onto the teddy grahams! The water is made from blue colored piping gel.

Butterfly cake...This was so easy to do! It's a round cake cut in half, then flip the sides so the rounded edges are touching in the middle. Cut a notch out of each of the side flat edges to shape the wings, and decorate! I used a bunch of organic candies on this one, and a pretzel rod for the body.

Peeps Easter cake! The sides of this cake are made of Peeps marshmallow candies. The top decorations are marshmallow chicks and eggs. I used candy straws for the grass and pastel colored peanut M&Ms for the border.

Fun with Fondant

My first ever, self-taught attempts at using fondant. Not my favorite medium...I much prefer buttercream for decorating, as well as taste!

(my bow flopped =( I guess that's why they say to leave it to dry overnight...lesson learned!)

Dora the Explorer

I made this Dora the Explorer cake for my daughter's third birthday. It was my first time using a character pan, so I did a trial run first. I think this is the picture of the trial cake.

Wilton Class Cakes

Here are some of my cakes from my Wilton I and II classes, in October and November of 2007.

First cake ever!
Wilton I final cake - rose bouquet. Everyone in the class had cakes that were the same colors (yellow base, white border, purple flowers, pink bow, etc).
